Featured Photographer Documentary Video: Diane Arbus

Against the advice of many friends, Diane Arbus pursued her photographic documentation of people on the fringes of society. Her work was first shown in 1967, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York City presented a major exhibition of several photographers. By 1972, the year after her death by suicide, Arbus’ work was everywhere.

Dumpster Lunch With A Large Iced Coffee: Life On The Streets of Chicago

While I was on my way to the LaSalle Metra Station to catch the 407 express back to my little homogenized suburban village, I happened to notice Phil on his way to get some lunch. Phil has a route through the alleys just one block off of Michigan Ave. that he travels each day in search of food. Today he found something to eat in a dumpster across from the Chicago Cultural Center. I ran around the corner to the Dunkin Donuts and got him one of his favorite drinks: a large iced coffee. It was quite hot out today, and Phil was more than pleased to have a refreshing beverage to go with his lunch. Phil began to explain how black coffee beans help wash out all the venom that the spirits inject into him while he sleeps. After a few swigs of the iced coffee, Phil s eyes lit up as he said aha that sure is good! I asked Phil what his plans were for the winter. He had mentioned that he might be heading down south when I spoke with him this past spring. Last winter was rather rough, and Phil end

Word From The Street: New Shoes 21

Photography with a focus: As many people know, I spend some of my time and money trying to bring relief to those who live on the streets of Chicago. Much of my photography focuses on the darker aspects of society. Today while leading a workshop, I came across a rather large man who has a rather large problem. His shoes are past worn out. But that s not the only problem he wears a size 21! It s real hard to get a size 21 at a thrift store or shelter. Here s the deal: I m looking for three people who are willing to donate $20.00 to get this man a new pair of shoes. I ll personally take him to the store and purchase the shoes. He says they will cost $61.00 and some change. If folks toss in the $60.00, I ll throw in the remainder and use my time to get him the shoes. NONE of the money will go for booze or drugs or anything but new shoes. As always, photos will be posted showing him with the new shoes. Street photography is far more than taking interesting photos; it s about social and pol
